Powder Compacting Cells RPC Uncompromising precision and efficiency in every detail

The RPC 120 and RPC 250 product lines are specifically designed to support the production of high-performance indexable inserts and other precision carbide parts.

They are compatible with all ROBOWORKER automation systems.

In the following you will discover more about ejection principle, software and control technology.

The ejection principle For precise pressing processes and optimal powder compaction

The advantage of this principle lies in the fact that the die remains fixed, while the upper and lower punches move along a single axis only. In the widely used withdrawal principle, however, two axes are in motion—the die and the upper punch—each generating following errors that consequently affect the motion profile.

Furthermore, the density distribution and the position of the neutral phase can be optimally controlled thanks to the fully programmable punch movements.

Dwell times before decompression and ejection are significantly reduced or eliminated.

The principle is supported in our presses by a corresponding mechanical design that ensures maximum system rigidity and load-bearing capacity and that separates force guiding from precision guiding elements.

Software and control technology At the heart of the ROBOWORKER Compacting Cells RPC

To fully leverage the advantages of the ejection principle, it requires a one-of-a-kind, highly sophisticated software and control technology.

ROBOWORKER's proprietary Dynamic Torque Management enables ultra-precise position control, continuously tracked and fine-tuned by a nanometer-precision measurement system. In process-critical areas, deviations between the target and actual press curves are kept below 10 µm.

The coordinated, precisely controlled movements of the upper and lower punches provide superior control of compaction and forming, producing crack-free compacts. Using 7th-order polynomials, any abrupt motion is eliminated, resulting in motion sequences that are effectively “silky-smooth".

Maximum operational efficiency

Maximum workplace efficiency is ensured by factors such as:

  • an automated setup process
  • a modular product management
  • a 3D real-time simulation of press motion, placing patter and punch cleaning
  • an intelligent collision and tool monitoring

This significantly reduces setup times and potential errors from operator input, while deliberately leveraging synergies between the press and automation.

Order setup and tool selection are intuitively designed, allowing operation without programming skills or simply via a QR code scanner.

Did you know? ROBOWORKER presses feature a COMPATIBILITY MODE with FETTE and OSTERWALDER presses. This allows surfaces to be easily adjusted and even enables the transfer of press profiles from the FETTE presses.

Sometimes, a “better process” is not the only requirement for a machine. Often, a new system is expected to reliably replicate an established, proven process. The RPC meets both demands.

By allowing the emulation of press curves from other systems, tools that were specifically optimized for certain compaction processes, can be operated on the RPC just as effectively as on the original presses.

In addition, the user interface offers extensive customization options, which can be adjusted by the customer to enable fast, familiar, and safe operation of the machine.

Modular product management Centralized definition and reuse of process modules

The modular product management divides the product into relevant modules, enabling centralized definition and reuse of process modules across thousands of compacts. Changes can be automatically applied to all relevant products, while also taking into account additional product-specific data. For example, during tool changes, filling shoe replacements, or program adjustments, the RPC automatically calculates the appropriate motion profile.

Digital twin of press and press tools

The real-time 3D simulation of press motions—the digital twin of press and press tools—verifies product programming, enabling product optimization even before the first pressing. Combined with the ability to prepare a subsequent order during the current one, this significantly reduces setup times.

The 3D visualization provides a view inside the tooling—not just as a simple animation, as is often the case, but as a micrometer-accurate simulation.

Wherever possible, the press automatically optimizes the motion profile to deliver minimal cycle times. For instance, the upper punch’s start is synchronized with the filling shoe ensuring that a safety distance of 10 mm is never breached. The outcome is a high-precision synchronized motion that appears so tight in reality it can almost startle the observer.

Press tools Special protection for cost-intensive components

As central and cost-intensive components of the powder press, press tools require special protection during operation to ensure their service life and maintain process reliability. ROBOWORKER presses monitor operator inputs and correct tool entries, automatically stop the machine in the event of mechanical issues, and provide additional automated protection functions.
